Jussie Smollett Speaks Out: 'Special Forces' Exit, Hate Crime Controversy & Life After (2025)

Six years after a hate crime controversy that divided the nation, Jussie Smollett is back in the spotlight, this time as a contestant on Special Forces: World’s Toughest Test. But here’s where it gets controversial: despite his high-profile legal battle and public scrutiny, Smollett remains unapologetically himself, declaring, 'Life goes on.' Is he a symbol of resilience or a figure still shrouded in doubt? Let’s dive in.

Smollett’s journey on the FOX series was cut short in Season 4, Episode 3 when a lung infection forced his medical withdrawal. Though initially 'horrified' by the setback, he quickly found solace in a luxurious bed and breakfast, where he enjoyed one of the 'greatest meals of [his] life' after days of enduring the harsh Moroccan desert. 'At that moment, I said, ‘Come on, lung infection!’’ Smollett joked in a Zoom interview with Decider, showcasing his signature humor even in adversity.

But this is the part most people miss: throughout the show, Smollett openly addressed the 2019 controversy that thrust him into the public eye. Six years ago, he reported to the Chicago Police Department that he was the victim of a hate crime, alleging that two masked men attacked him, wrapped a rope around his neck, and referenced MAGA (President Donald Trump’s ‘Make America Great Again’ slogan). However, prosecutors accused Smollett of staging the attack, leading to charges of disorderly conduct for allegedly lying to police. Despite maintaining his innocence, he was found guilty in 2021 and sentenced to 150 days in jail, serving only six before the verdict was overturned in November 2024.

On Special Forces, Smollett continued to assert his innocence, acknowledging that public opinion remains divided. 'I think that everybody, whether they believe the truth or the other stuff, has their own opinion,' he said. 'At this point, I’m okay with that because I have to be. Life goes on.'

Today, Smollett is 'happy to be doing cool stuff,' embracing vulnerability and authenticity. 'It’s okay to show that you have a heart,' he noted, reflecting on his experience. But here’s the question: does his willingness to open up earn him redemption, or will the controversy forever define him in the public eye? Let us know in the comments.

During the interview, Smollett also discussed Eva Marcille’s near-drowning during a challenge and the possibility of his sister, Jurnee Smollett-Bell, joining him on the show—a scenario he humorously dismissed, calling her a 'superhero' who would 'beat up everybody.'

When asked about his future on competition shows, Smollett laughed, 'I’m going Baddies. Baddies on Zeus. That’s where I’m gonna go.' But one thing’s for sure: you won’t see him on Special Forces again. 'Hell to the no,' he declared.

What do you think? Is Jussie Smollett’s return to the public eye a step toward redemption, or is his past too polarizing to move beyond? Share your thoughts below.

Special Forces: World’s Toughest Test airs Thursday nights at 9 p.m. ET/PT on FOX, with new episodes streaming the next day on Hulu.
